Thoughts on the NHL All-Star Skills Game January 29, 2008

Here are a few observations on this activity:

  • Speed race: boooring – bring back the old format
  • Too much happening at the same time at once on the once when they did the “team activity”, cameras were not keeping up
  • The judges for the last segment were nobodies – where were Gretzky, Bossy, Lafleur or other hall of famer?

They need to shape up this activity, it holds a lot of potential but excecution is, well, bad.  When the players have to ask for pucks, you hit rock bottom.

I think these guys got it right.

An all-time favorite at home, Morcheeba is releasing a new album on April 2nd this year. The Antidote (latest release) was kinda weak, no more Skye (the signer, she’s now on a solo career, please come back!). For the upcoming one, they have a bunch of guest singers, so could be very interesting.

This is pure ’70’s vintage space/symphonic prog that just begs to be listened to since it’s just so good. Eloy’s masterpiece (Ocean) is one of those albums that rank up there with Selling England by the Pound (Genesis), Dark Side of the Moon (Pink Floyd) and Godbluff (Van der Graaf Generator). Should you be into this genre, just go ahead and give this rare clip a whirl, you won’t be disapointed. This is Decay of the Logos, tack #3 of 4 on Ocean.

LEGO is 50 today! Not everyday a venerable toy maker lasts that long in the market and that we still have fun with the bricks.

My disappointment is the lack of materials on the www.lego.com site. They route you to the online store to buy new models, no history or milestones. Also, Google added a new logo on their main page:

I coach my son’s novice-B hockey team and we played our best game ever this Sunday and it was 0-0 until the end..  Oh dammit, with 0.9 seconds to go the other team scored.   AAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!  We can’t seem to get “the lucky break” we need!  Just too funny! (gotta laugh off these things)

It’s just too funny.  I ordered some CDs from the record label who handles the band Quidam and the album “Live in Mexico ‘99″ was really cheap so I picked one up.  To my great surprise, it was a tape cassette, which explains why it was so cheap!  Just too funny, and the only place left I can listen to it is in my car.

NHL- something’s gotta happen January 25, 2008

I read the blog “Fire Bettman” because I agree with the idea that the head honcho for the NHL needs to go.  I don’t wish for anyone to loose their job but I don’t think he gets it.  Today’s post is on the mark.

Quite frankly, when the NHL is not selling into it’s key demographic (the north part of North America, like Winnipeg & Quebec City) and is trying to keep teams in Nashville (??) and implement one in Las Vegas (ice hockey in the desert..) they need to re-think where they’re going with this.

Plus, the NHL all-stars are a no-show at the all-star game, which is absurd, just a tad less absurd of showing games on the Vs channel.  Talk to ESPN for crying out loud!  Talk to local TV stations!  Give all these guys a great deal, cancel the Vs contract and get some viewers.  Sounds like rocket science?

For those who want a good laugh and like hockey, try this film.  Just trust me, it features “Gary Buttman”.

Need wisdom choosing a new car January 22, 2008

Alright, car decision time!  My lease on the 04 Murano is ending and I’m leaving Nissan, not happy with reliability but it was a fun drive.  So I’m down to 2 vehicules to select the successor to the current ride:

  • 2008 Subaru Outback XT turbo w/leather
  • 2008 Honda Accord EX-L or EX-L V6

Both have their pros and cons, where the Honda should be more reliable (by reputation at least) and makes a very decent sedan.  The Subaru is one impressive ride especially in winter in Canada, but is less roomy for the interior.  Kids are school age so newborn gear is not a factor, like strollers.

Any wisdom out there?  Thanks for your comments!
